Factset: How You can Invest in Hedge Funds’ Biggest Investment
Tl;dr FactSet is the most undervalued widespread SaaS/IT solution stock that exists
If any of you have relevant experience or are friends with people in Investment Banking/other high finance, you know that Factset is the lifeblood of their financial analysis toolkit if and when it’s not Bloomberg, which isn’t even publicly traded. Factset has been around since 1978 and it’s considered a staple like Bloomberg in many wealth management firms, and it offers some of the easiest to access and understandable financial data so many newer firms focused less on trading are switching to Factset because it has a lot of the same data Bloomberg offers for half the cost. When it comes to modern financial data, Factset outcompetes Reuters and arguably Bloomberg as well due to their API services which makes Factset much more preferable for quantitative divisions of banks/hedge funds as API integration with Python/R is the most important factor for vast data lakes of financial data, this suggests Factset will be much more prepared for programming making its way into traditional finance fields. According to Factset, their mission for data delivery is to: “Integrate the data you need with your applications, web portals, and statistical packages. Whether you need market, company, or alternative data, FactSet flexible data delivery services give you normalized data through APIs and a direct delivery of local copies of standard data feeds. Our unique symbology links and aggregates a variety of content sources to ensure consistency, transparency, and data integrity across your business. Build financial models and power customized applications with FactSet APIs in our developer portal”. Their technical focus for their data delivery system alone should make it stand out compared to Bloomberg, whose UI is far more outdated and complex on top of not being as technically developed as Factset’s. Factset is the key provider of buy-side portfolio analysis for IBs, Hedge funds, and Private Equity firms, and it’s making its way into non-quantitative hedge funds as well because quantitative portfolio management makes automation of risk management and the application of portfolio theory so much easier, and to top it off, Factset’s scenario analysis and simulation is unique in its class. Factset also is able to automate trades based on individual manager risk tolerance and ML optimization for Forex trading as well. Not only does Factset provide solutions for financial companies, they are branching out to all corporations now and providing quantitative analytics for them in the areas of “corporate development, M&A, strategy, treasury, financial planning and analysis, and investor relations workflows”. Factset will eventually in my opinion reach out to Insurance Risk Management a lot more in the future as that’s a huge industry which has yet to see much automation of risk management yet, and with the field wide open, Factset will be the first to take advantage without a shadow of a doubt. So let’s dig into the company’s financials now:
Their latest 8k filing reported the following:
Revenue increased 2.6%, or $9.6 million, to $374.1 million compared with $364.5 million for the same period in fiscal 2019. The increase is primarily due to higher sales of analytics, content and technology solutions (CTS) and wealth management solutions.
Annual Subscription Value (ASV) plus professional services was $1.52 billion at May 31, 2020, compared with $1.45 billion at May 31, 2019. The organic growth rate, which excludes the effects of acquisitions, dispositions, and foreign currency movements, was 5.0%. The primary contributors to this growth rate were higher sales in FactSet's wealth and research workflow solutions and a price increase in the Company's international region
Adjusted operating margin improved to 35.5% compared with 34.0% in the prior year period primarily as a result of reduced employee-related operating expenses due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Diluted earnings per share (EPS) increased 11.0% to $2.63 compared with $2.37 for the same period in fiscal 2019.
Adjusted diluted EPS rose 9.2% to $2.86 compared with $2.62 in the prior year period primarily driven by an improvement in operating results.
The Company’s effective tax rate for the third quarter decreased to 15.0% compared with 18.6% a year ago, primarily due to an income tax expense in the prior year related to finalizing the Company's tax returns with no similar event for the three months ended May 31, 2020.
FactSet increased its quarterly dividend by $0.05 per share or 7% to $0.77 marking the fifteenth consecutive year the Company has increased dividends, highlighting its continued commitment to returning value to shareholders.
As you can see, there’s not much of a negative sign in sight here.
It makes sense considering how FactSet’s FCF has never slowed down:
https://preview.redd.it/frmtdk8e9hk51.png?width=276&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c0ff12539e0b2f9dbfda13d0565c5ce2b6f8f1a

https://preview.redd.it/6axdb6lh9hk51.png?width=593&format=png&auto=webp&s=9af1673272a5a2d8df28f60f4707e948a00e5ff1
FactSet’s annual subscriptions and professional services have made its way to foreign and developing markets, and many of them are opting for FactSet’s cheaper services to reduce costs and still get copious amounts of data and models to work with.
Here’s what FactSet had to say regarding its competitive position within the market of providing financial data in its last 10k: “Despite competing products and services, we enjoy high barriers to entry and believe it would be difficult for another vendor to quickly replicate the extensive databases we currently offer. Through our in-depth analytics and client service, we believe we can offer clients a more comprehensive solution with one of the broadest sets of functionalities, through a desktop or mobile user interface or through a standardized or bespoke data feed.” And FactSet is confident that their ML services cannot be replaced by anybody else in the industry either: “In addition, our applications, including our client support and service offerings, are entrenched in the workflow of many financial professionals given the downloading functions and portfolio analysis/screening capabilities offered. We are entrusted with significant amounts of our clients' own proprietary data, including portfolio holdings. As a result, our products have become central to our clients’ investment analysis and decision-making.” (https://last10k.com/sec-filings/fds#link_fullReport), if you read the full report and compare it to the most recent 8K, you’ll find that the real expenses this quarter were far lower than expected by the last 10k as there was a lower than expected tax rate and a 3% increase in expected operating margin from the expected figure as well. The company also reports a 90% customer retention rate over 15 years, so you know that they’re not lying when they say the clients need them for all sorts of financial data whether it’s for M&A or wealth management and Equity analysis:
https://www.investopedia.com/terms/f/factset.asp
https://preview.redd.it/yo71y6qj9hk51.png?width=355&format=png&auto=webp&s=a9414bdaa03c06114ca052304a26fae2773c3e45

FactSet also has remarkably good cash conversion considering it’s a subscription based company, a company structure which usually takes on too much leverage. Speaking of leverage, FDS had taken on a lot of leverage in 2015:

https://preview.redd.it/oxaa1wel9hk51.png?width=443&format=png&auto=webp&s=13d60d2518980360c403364f7150392ab83d07d7
So what’s that about? Why were FactSet’s long term debts at 0 and all of a sudden why’d the spike up? Well usually for a company that’s non-cyclical and has a well-established product (like FactSet) leverage can actually be good at amplifying returns, so FDS used this to their advantage and this was able to help the share’s price during 2015. Also, as you can see debt/ebitda is beginning a rapid decline anyway. This only adds to my theory that FactSet is trying to expand into new playing fields. FactSet obviously didn’t need the leverage to cover their normal costs, because they have always had consistently growing margins and revenue so the debt financing was only for the sake of financing growth. And this debt can be considered covered and paid off, considering the net income growth of 32% between 2018 and 2019 alone and the EPS growth of 33%
https://preview.redd.it/e4trju3p9hk51.png?width=387&format=png&auto=webp&s=6f6bee15f836c47e73121054ec60459f147d353e

EBITDA has virtually been exponential for FactSet for a while because of the bang-for-buck for their well-known product, but now as FactSet ventures into algorithmic trading and corporate development the scope for growth is broadly expanded.
https://preview.redd.it/yl7f58tr9hk51.png?width=489&format=png&auto=webp&s=68906b9ecbcf6d886393c4ff40f81bdecab9e9fd

P/E has declined in the past 2 years, making it a great time to buy.

https://preview.redd.it/4mqw3t4t9hk51.png?width=445&format=png&auto=webp&s=e8d719f4913883b044c4150f11b8732e14797b6d
Increasing ROE despite lowering of leverage post 2016

Mountains of cash have been piling up in the coffers increasing chances of increased dividends for shareholders (imo dividend is too low right now, but increasing it will tempt more investors into it), and on top of that in the last 10k a large buyback expansion program was implemented for $210m worth of shares, which shows how confident they are in the company itself.
https://preview.redd.it/fliirmpx9hk51.png?width=370&format=png&auto=webp&s=1216eddeadb4f84c8f4f48692a2f962ba2f1e848

SGA expense/Gross profit has been declining despite expansion of offices
I’m a bit concerned about the skin in the game leadership has in this company, since very few executives/board members have significant holdings in the company, but the CEO himself is a FactSet veteran, and knows his way around the company. On top of that, Bloomberg remains king for trading and the fixed income security market, and Reuters beats out FactSet here as well. If FactSet really wants to increase cash flow sources, the expansion into insurance and corp dev has to be successful.
Summary: FactSet has a lot of growth still left in its industry which is already fast-growing in and of itself, and it only has more potential at its current valuation. Earnings September 24th should be a massive beat due to investment banking demand and growth plus Hedge fund requirements for data and portfolio management hasn’t gone anywhere and has likely increased due to more market opportunities to buy-in.
Calls have shitty greeks, but if you're ballsy October 450s LOL, I'm holding shares
I’d say it’s a great long term investment, and it should at least be on your watchlist.

Need someone that uses IBKR to hold my hand.

I'm apparently some kind of moron- I'm unable to figure out how to get set up with automated trading on interactive brokers.
Currently I'm paper trading forex on OandA using some simple curl requests on a headless server. I'd like to start trading futures, and ibkr was the top recommendation.
Goals: -When my own (already developed) system generates an entry or exit alert, execute a market order on a NASDAQ micro futures contact. -Do it on a headless Google cloud server
From chatting with some folks, I've heard I need to use IB Gateway, and there may be a need to initially use GUI for authentication. That's fine, as long as GUI elements aren't needed later when it's running.
I don't need any kind of data feed from IBKR, since I already have a system that generates alerts when I want it to. I just need the bare minimum to actually execute these market orders.
I've signed up for IBKR and gotten my account approved and all that. Then I thought I'd go over to the education library and work through the TWS materials (just to get acquainted) and then go through the TWS programming Python course. At this point, the website wants me to register or login. I click the button that says I already have an ibkr account, it asks me to login, I do, then it takes me to the account page. Where is the course!?😵
After going through that loop every which way, I've given up on that for now and I'm here asking you for help.
Anyone willing to give some guidance, either in this thread or through DM? I feel like what I want to do is extremely simple and I will be barely scratching the surface of what's available to me through IBKR. I just want to get started.
Advice, resources, guides, and insults are all welcome!
Thanks!

It makes sense considering how FactSet’s FCF has never slowed down
FactSet’s annual subscriptions and professional services have made its way to foreign and developing markets, and many of them are opting for FactSet’s cheaper services to reduce costs and still get copious amounts of data and models to work with.

FactSet also has remarkably good cash conversion considering it’s a subscription based company, a company structure which usually takes on too much leverage. Speaking of leverage, FDS had taken on a lot of leverage in 2015:

EBITDA has virtually been exponential for FactSet for a while because of the bang-for-buck for their well-known product, but now as FactSet ventures into algorithmic trading and corporate development the scope for growth is broadly expanded.

P/E has declined in the past 2 years, making it a great time to buy.

Is there a free datafeed which I can feed backtrader with?

I wanted to say "Free Live Datafeed" but seems I cannot edit the title.
I am new to forex trading/algotrading, but am reading up on it recently. I wrote some simple EAs with metatrader but would like to switch to a general purpose programming language like python, which is when I came across backtrader.
With metatrader, I have the option of opening a demo account with a broker and I can run my EA against the data from the broker. I read in the documentation (please correct me if I'm wrong) that backtrader supports live feeds from three brokers, namely IB, Oanda and Live Trading.
Before I open an account with them, I would like to know if their demo accounts allow me the access to the data that I need to feed backtrader with. So my question do any of their demo accounts allow me to access the live data to feed backtrader?
Another question which is not directly related, in the Oanda page https://developer.oanda.com/rest-live/introduction/ it says that the API version 1.0 will be deprecated. And backtrader seems to be using the version 1.0 https://cookbook.backtrader.com/documentation/live/oanda/oanda/. Does anyone know if version 2.0 support will be added to backtrader?

Our most recent AMA with Terence Tan the Head of Business Development and Helen Astaniou Chief Marketing officer discussing TIO Markets: the next-generation of FX trading.

Our most recent AMA with Terence Tan the Head of Business Development and Helen Astaniou Chief Marketing officer discussing TIO Markets: the next-generation of FX trading.

TIO Markets: the next-generation of FX trading.
Q : If TIOMarkets is the first company to offer FX trading using crypto, why don't we switch the domain to dot com (.com) instead of dot uk (.uk) ?A >> We are switching to dot com (.com). The website is still in progress. What you see now is not the website that we are going to be launching with. So, don't worry about that.

Q : What is the symbiosis between the tradeio and TIOMarkets?A >> The biggest thing that I want to mention is the Liquidity Pool. Although there's different companies, and there's different entities, the registrations are completely different. Even the platforms are different between TIOMarkets and tradeio. However, what happens is as TIOMarkets gets bigger and stronger, and there's more volume, there are more clients. People are trading and the company is making money, the profit from that is going to go back into Liquidity Pool. Anybody on trade.io Liquidity Pool is going to start benefit in a big way when they start seeing that daily income get bigger and bigger. So, I would say that it’s probably the biggest symbiosis there.
Q : Tell a little bit about TIOMarkets and how we are planning to make it really big.A >> For TIOMarkets, we have been preparing for the launch for a long time and we really want to make this something very different. We have come up with innovative packages and innovative methods that appeal to traders. Without letting too much of the cat out of the bag, I just want to say that we have actually come up with certain subscription packages that really allow traders to experience some very innovative features and benefits.
Not only that, whatever that we are pushing out to our trading community, allows you to be able to trade with really low commissions. Commissions can be as low as 0 per standard lot. And spreads will be very low as well. And not only that, we are pushing out some really very innovative features.
We have actually talked to some traders about the features and they loved it. For example, one of the features is that it actually allows you to be able to (what I call), " add an undo" button for your trade. So, just imagine this scenario, imagine that you are actually trading and within the first 60 minutes of you executing your trade, if the market actually goes against you, if you actually took up insurance for the trade (for just a very small insurance premium), you will actually have the ability to undo your trade. And whatever floating losses you had will be reimbursed back to you.
Not only that, we believe that traders should be given a chance. Even if they make mistakes. So, just imagine this, within the first month of you trading with us (TIOMarkets), you somehow experience a margin call, or you lose what you put in, what we will do is that we will actually reimburse 50% of your first time deposit back for you to trade again. Why we do this is because we want to make it a point for our traders to have a second chance. We believe that everybody deserves a second chance to be able to learn as they go along. These are just some of the innovative benefits that we have come up with.

Q : How is the 10K users target going to be attained, apart from the 3 months free?A >> We are going to start on 2nd of April. We have 6 big pre-registration campaigns and each of those campaigns have a slightly different message, tone and they are going to be targeted to slightly different people target groups. So the idea is, whatever attracts you the most is the thing that helps you to click. So we've got a wide range of messaging, channels and platforms that we're using to get the message out and we are really going to go as big as we can to try and get the numbers in. We really believe that the numbers will be big for a lot of reasons.
And just to add to the previous question about what makes us different, some of here at the trade.io office have FX background. Like myself, we have been involved in FX before. We know the industry, we know what talks and what doesn't talk, we know what works and what doesn't work. We have seen that there is a lot of fatigue in the FX industry. The people are sick and tired of attempting to trade, and for various reasons (maybe that trade is not getting through, etc). Any reasons that makes it frustrating for the trader, when they just want to trade FX. And we are coming in here from this angle. We know the industry, we know what's possible and what not possible from a brokerage perspective. We are going to try to completely overcome any of those issues. Our solution to that problem is essentially the subscription package.
Here's the theory, that you are trading and where your usual FX brokerage is taking out their commission (maybe they are paying commissions for IB, maybe they are widening the spread, maybe they are taking money from here to try and meet their other target they've got). We are saying that none of that. We are not taking anything out. Our subscription package is very transparent. It is once per month at a fixed cost, you know what exactly that cost is and it is at very good price. And thereafter, your trading is essentially free. This will be really cheap and there will be big savings to be made.
This isn't anywhere else in the FX industry at the moment. It will be completely unique to us and it will be something that is extremely attractive to season traders. And for the millennials or the aspiring traders (who don't know how to trade yet), it will be appealing as well because we are saying we know what the issues are, we know what the problems are in FX. If you trade with us, thing are clear, things are clean. We'll support and educate you and you will have a much better overall experience.
That’s our positioning. Aside from that, we've got the FCA Regulation, which is absolutely huge. I'm just personally speaking having worked for a couple of FX companies in the past that didn't have the FCA Regulation, it was always something that clients keeps asking for. So that is one that is really significant for us.
**Terence adding in to Helen's explanation >> Coming from the viewpoint of a lot of us have in the FX industry, one way or another, we really want to come from the angle where we want to be able to create a perfect trading environment for traders. At this point of time we are putting the focal point on our traders creating an environment which is great from them in terms of trading and not like other brokers out there where the emphasis is mainly on profit. Whatever we do such as the subscription packages and the other innovative features that we have are all from the view of a trader.

Q : What makes us stand out from the competitors?
A >> Its going to be our subscription package that isn't available anywhere else. Secondly would be the TIO reimburse (that's what Terence talked about before).Next would be the TIO Shield. That is our fancy name for the really cool feature whereby if you trade on a specific currency pair and if it all goes wrong, you will get your money back (essentially minus a small premium). These are the 3 big points that differentiates us aside from the other stuffs I've said about our tone and angle.
Q : Should we expect TIOMarkets to be fully operational on the 9th of April?
A >> We are opening the doors for pre-registration on the 2nd of April. We've got a little surprise campaign coming out a little earlier than that. That's all I'll say about that for now but then there are 10,000. We don't know exactly when that will be. We believe that it will be sooner rather than later. Even so, one week wouldn't be long enough, so give us a couple of weeks and then we will fully open the doors and let you know when that will be.
Q : The profit for trade.io will just come from the subscription and not from the spreads?
A >> It comes from both, actually. The profit from the company comes firstly from the subscription packages. And then secondly, we are going to be offering what I am calling an "ala carte" option which is maybe you don’t want to pay monthly, that's fine. You can just trade on-the-go as you go. And the spreads will be a little wider but we're going to be fully transparent and honest about that. So, it's your choice which you prefer to trade.
** Additional point from Helen >> It is going to be green (beginner) user friendly and we're creating some pretty cool educational packages. Pretty much everything we're doing, we are saying right. What is different to what we've done before, what is different to how the others are doing it. How can we make it more interesting, less jargony and more fun. Thus it will be definitely friendlier to new users.
Q : Who is our liquidity provider?
A >> that is way out of the marketing remit perhaps. We (Helen and Terence) are unable to answer that.
Q : What is our plan to get partners onboard?
A >> We actually have a very big plan in terms of having joint venture partners and affiliate onboarding because we believe affiliates are going to play a very big part of our whole entire strategy. So we actually have plans that will be launched in Phases.
We'll be paying our joint venture partner and affiliates CPA commissions. Those of you who are in the industry will be familiar with that its Cost Per Acquisitions(CPA). So depending of the numbers of traders or clients that you refer to us and which country they are from you will be paid one time CPA commission. This is kind of controversial in the sense of we don't pay out IB commission because what is mentioned earlier, we basically want to create a great trading environment for traders and probably those of you who know that when IB commissions were paid it has to come from somewhere and very often is comes from the traders. So in our case we are just paying one time CPA commission. Later on down the road, we will launch other hybrid commission program as well. In terms of the CPA commission we'll also allow our partners to be able to have sub-affiliates as well down to about 2 tiers. In other words, not only you will be able to refer traders but you will actually be able to refer sub-affiliate as well.
Not only that, previously like Helen mentioned we actually have a lot of different funnel which we coming out with and those funnel will be made available to our affiliate as well so we'll be testing those funnels and we'll let you know whichever funnel that works, we'll provide you with the emails plus we provides you with the banners and landing pages. So all you have to do as an affiliates is to mail to our databases or however you're going to drive the traffic to your landing pages and after that the company will take over to help you convert those leads into actual clients for you.
It is really exciting in term of the partners. We are giving all the resources they need, we are making the resources as attractive as possible, to make it easiest as possible for them to make lots of money. That will help us a lot. And just as at the partnership side, we've got an exciting addition to the team over here. We've got a new Head of partnership that started with us today in fact and she is a bit of a of a big deal in FX. She has got some of the incredible contacts and networks so that we can really hit the ground when it comes to the partnership.
Q : When is our website is going to live?A >> Firstly, we are going to have what we called landing pages go live on the 2nd. They are individual pages not connected to a bigger website specifically and their purpose is specifically to lead generate. So there we will be going live. For the actual website is as you all know is a big project and a work in progress so that’s going to come a bit later.
Q : How are we going to differentiate ourselves?
A >> I've seen it three or four times now on the chat they are very worried about how we are going to differentiate ourselves. We will! You can trust that we'll because as I said we've been there and we've done that. We've been in FX before. Many of us we don’t want to be like the other brokers. We going to be different not only our offerings and our products but in the way that we express those things. From the tone to the visuals to the actual offerings. It's going to be a breath of fresh air in all aspects apart from the actual platform we're using which is a very well-known very popular platform and of course the instruments are going to be popular instruments that will also be offered by the brokers we can't differentiate there, we don't want to. So, you'll see.
Q : Will hedging be available and what is the maximum leverage available ?A >> Yes and the maximum leverage 1:500
Q : Is there any plans to collaborate with another full bright firm like another Forex firm or other to boost our trade volume?
A >> No plans to partner with another FX at this stage to boost our trading volume.

7 reasons why should you become an Introducing Broker with IQ Option?

7 reasons why should you become an Introducing Broker with IQ Option?

Reason #2 — Market Analysis & Blog!

IQ Option trading platform
There is plenty of information available for IQ Option traders and partners: from timely news and forecasts to guides and trading strategies. The main point of the Market Analysis and IQ Blog is to show how easily you can create an alternative to professional news outlets, magazines and websites, dedicated entirely to trading witch one you can monetise with IQ Option Introducing Broker program. There are several reasons to use Market Analysis when introducing customers to the platform and turn to blog articles when looking for information. This article will help you understand how you can benefit from the value that both provide to traders.

https://preview.redd.it/pr3qbeam9ej31.png?width=2554&format=png&auto=webp&s=f54d9041e6609a9a68e8a5490278eea3e77227ea
First, both features are tailored specifically to IQ Option clients and our partners are welcome to use our intellectual products with a relevant reference. In our articles we write about assets that are readily available on the platform and avoid the unnecessary information noise — things that are either not important or do not directly affect your traders’ the trading process. In times when overabundance of information is inevitable, being able to read things that really matter is a huge plus. This feature can save a lot of time and help traders concentrate on what is really important.
Secondly, market analysis can be found on the trading platform itself. Usually, traders have to consult external sources when looking for breaking news and updates regarding the assets they are about to trade. This is no longer the problem when trading with IQ Option. Everything traders should know about the assets of their choice can be found without leaving the trading app.
News, Economic Calendar and Earnings Calendar are three separate tabs in the Market Analysis interface. Each of them is dedicated to a separate trading aspect.

https://preview.redd.it/a85vcx2q9ej31.png?width=2558&format=png&auto=webp&s=50d6ffd13e01fae47c9b8484965d6a9ac26351b1
News’ concentrates on delivering timely information on the world’s most important financial and economic events. Currency exchange rate fluctuations and events that have triggered them can be found here. Major political events, as well, can directly influence the exchange rate of national currencies.

https://preview.redd.it/h6gkk8ks9ej31.png?width=2558&format=png&auto=webp&s=b08c69dabeb4bfaa93ed5da93b485f84cab3f87a
Economic Calendar’ is a collection of upcoming Forex-related events. In the world of trading everything is interconnected. Inflation rates and unemployment can affect the exchange rate of national currencies. Economic Calendar, therefore, warns traders of upcoming announcements that can be turned into trading opportunities. Is a useful feature that can be found on numerous Forex-related websites and online services.
Earnings Calendar’ works in the same manner as Economic Calendar but for Stock Market. Stock prices go up and down depending on the fundamentals — important metrics that mirror the financial wellbeing of the company. Earnings reports (quarterly financial announcements made by all public companies) can trigger massive price swings. It is, therefore, beneficial to have them all listed in one place, knowing when to trade what company.
One more source of invaluable knowledge is IQ Blog, a resource dedicated to in-depth materials. What kind of articles can be found in the IQ Option Blog? Most articles fall into one of the following categories: technical analysis, industry news, platform upgrades, trading strategies, and tips.

https://preview.redd.it/r449q0zw9ej31.png?width=2558&format=png&auto=webp&s=243ea9b5375464fa1bcd46eebb5ab97f104b8e5d
Technical analysis is an extremely important element of most trading strategies. Indicators and patterns, applied correctly, can yield impressive results. Mastery in this field can set successful traders apart from their less successful counterparts. Even when trading with fundamentals in mind, traders still turn to technical analysis in order to validate certain theories and double-check investment decisions they are about to make. Both newcomers and industry veterans turn to it to increase their chances of success. Hence the sheer number of articles on the topic of indicators and technical analysis in general.
Technical analysis, however, is not the only topic that is covered in the IQ Blog. Articles also feature earnings reports, trading-related news, platform upgrades, strategies and tips. By reading them, traders can learn about important upcoming events, trading opportunities and ways to capitalize on them.
All in all, these two features — Market Analysis and IQ Blog — can help an aspiring trader become better by providing timely and accurate information on a wide range of topics: from technical analysis indicators and patterns to stock and currency trading. In trading, education is extremely important. As in any other pursuit, the same principles apply to the financial markets: the more you know, the more informed decision you make, the better the final result.

Also, I am looking in to forex ( I am liking oandas trading plat form very much so in comparison to IB )

Are futures fees etc usually cheaper compared to forex?

MT7: ONE STOP SHOP TO ADDRESSING CRITICAL EXCHANGE CHALLENGES

Digital forms of money have their expectations significantly dependent on trades. Following the quest for continued existence, there is a constant need for them to be continuously traded and exchanging them is a better approach to attain this. In any case, current trade exchanges have not been that efficient and satisfactory, hence the conceptualization of the revolutionary masternet to nip the problem in the bud. However, to add more impetus to the work of masternet, the developers made another huge contribution to the crypto circle. With its fresh out of the box new crypto exchange recently made public to further address these gluts of challenges, and to say the least, it had actually offered confidence to its quest for a better crypto exchange. Basically, MT7 is the trade set up by Masternet to gauge exchanges. It is of critical significance to the crypto world; Masternet Trading 7 (MT7) stage is a better variation to what was had on MT6 and is here to offer that gap that has been missing.
MASTERNET'S ROLE In the light of irregularities on well-known exchange infrastructures, Masternet took a crucial decision to make its voice heard. It had discharged Akasic Global that had in stock, some of the most intriguing and value-laded fundamental apparatus that made crypto exchanges conceivable. Basically, the developers just presented an exchanging framework that will on no small measure incorporate better features recorded on Akasic Global. The last guaranteed to have bots for robotized exchanges and other stunning highlights, for example, DApps and commercial center but the question is will MT7 breath life into these? WHAT IS MT7? This isn't the standard exchanging stage, however, is one that will change the substance of digital currencies that are being traded on various exchanges. To this end, what we have here is an advanced one that will lay belief to dealers' infrastructure and have them acquire gainfully.
It is at the top of the priority list to add more impetus for merchants by upgrading their experiences. In the first place, there are solid moves to enhance benefits as it is dynamically developed. Then again, you get the chance to appreciate the advantages that accompany computerized exchanges.
PHENOMENAL EXCHANGE PLATFORM
Trusted experts in the exchange ecosystem is optimistic that this will change the course of history. Indeed, even on fiat cash trades (FOREX), executing from the dreamland had not been conceivable. In any case, this has been had been made possible via the instrumentality of this platform. Among its various standing, MT7 ensures that requests can be set physically. In the event that you in anyway need to keep away from the hitches that accompany this, there is a second alternative – robotization. The thought is that exchanges can take a shot at autopilot if the necessary and important setups have been made.
To this end, there are two varieties to executing on the trade – manual and automatic. For the previous, a merchant needs to make orders for each exchange session. The last mentioned (programmed) stipulates that exchanges can be continued after the programmed mode had been turned on. In the light of this, you can set up the component and keeping in mind that you're sleeping away endlessly, your exchanges will be coordinated and benefits collected to that impact. There is likewise an exchanging bot that matches exchanges and furthermore helps in gaining benefits. You can set this up to profit by week after week reward dispensed to dealers.
IMPROVED UX Clients have not been really satisfied with what they got from past trades. For example, a portion of these have interfaces that leave dealers scratching their heads to appreciate what is before their screens. To this end, MT7 has in stock, an easy to use interface that can be gotten to on the web and portable platforms. The suggestion is that there are portable applications for this trade the same way Binance has in stock.
QUICKER TRADERS Crypto dealers are not on trades to keep a tab on the red light until the point that it turns green. There are constantly bullish minutes when a crypto coin will, in general, do well and it is at such occasions that brokers will in general win more. On MT7, you have a boundless stream of salary whether the market standing is great or not. To this end, brokers that may be intrigued to make use of the platform are guaranteed boundless benefit for each exchange. So also, fair exchanges are encouraged inside 5 seconds similarly as withdraw and deposit services are directed progressively and in actual-time. At last, there is throughout the day an online help infrastructure to take care of inquiries relating to utilizing the trade exchanges.
PAYMENTS: Various doors have been contracted to deal with record subsidizing of each broker. Profit can likewise be pulled back through bolstered payment channels. REWARD
MECHANISM To keep clients steadfast, MT7 has put in place a reward framework that sees to even dissemination of benefits among merchants in the same cycle. This means exchanges will be sorted into cycles and brokers that partake here will share gathered benefit among themselves. Interestingly, the number of people included will be lessened; making it conceivable to gain more.
IB REWARD The primary reward system is the IB Rewards. The thought behind this is clients are relied upon to buy 1000 PINS each week. This is additionally gathered into levels that stipulate gaining rewards from referred merchants.
For each dealer you allude to the trade, you get 0.2% of the IB Reward comparable. With this, groups can be figured and the main merchant that welcomed others will in general gain from them for being referred.
MAIN CONCERN MT7 is maybe the most reasonable an significant trade exchange platform on the globe that has put on place a value proposition for its client’s advancement. By all standard, the MT7 platform is the exchanging infrastructure leveraging on the blockchain technology to bring the cryptocurrencies needs to fore for better efficiency, transparency and critical solutions to exchanges.

Ego Trading & Humility-How managing your ego can help you improve

“Who is more humble? The scientist who looks at the universe with an open mind and accepts whatever the universe has to teach us, or somebody who says everything in this book must be considered the literal truth and never mind the fallibility of all the human beings involved?” ― Carl Sagan
Most often regardless of which online community be it stocktwits, reddit, facebook or discord I've seen traders either admitting to failure or those who avoid admitting those failures making grandiose claims that couldn't otherwise be further from the truth. But how do you navigate what people are saying, those who are actually profiting and learning from their mistakes or those who are choosing to be in a rut? Things we need to get out of the way first(summary for everything):
*Everyone has an ego, you cannot silence it because an ego is your sense of "self". You can only learn to manage it. *You do this by not trying to fight it, acknowledge it, listen to it, then make a clear distinction between what you're ego is telling you. And what is actually real. *An Ego is actually a good thing because it's likely what has driven you want to become a trader in the first place and will likely drive you to success if you can use it as a strength and not let it be a weakness
Think on this; trading is a magnet for ego, it promises rich rewards for those who can get into the 90%, it has proven time and time again that only 10-20% of traders are successful for any market. It's a sobering thought, and most likely will turn away a lot of traders from ever even clicking buy. Often you will see comments arguing that it is 85%, 90% or 95%, it does not matter, you will still have more of a chance in becoming a navy seal than you do becoming a successful trader. this is one thing specifically that I have seen people argue about here...and it is probably some of the most useless information to argue over if you were to pick something, it is high, regardless of it being 90% or 95% and it will not help you get better.
But why argue about it at all? this is the kicker, ego. People often become so frustrated with trading that they have a contrarian view to almost anything, this is not a good way to learn anything, period. If a stance is submitted they immediately become skeptical rather than doing DD. It is understandable people are often very suspicious of the information they receive, so many brokerages are handing out IB contracts like hotcakes to people who have never clicked buy or sell on anything other than Amazon. These are the people who are making real money selling fake programs and spreading misinformation, like alot of brokerages. In the forex market, it is even more cutthroat than stocks, this is because your brokerages, if they operate through a dealing desk, will actively trade against you, FXCM went out of business in the US because the NFA and CFTC came down on them hard for lying to their consumer base.
In regards to fixing all of this.. it will take a level of self-reflection. If there was one thing I wanted to bring from the equities market to the foreign exchange it would be Due Diligence a mix of fundamental analysis/technical to study what this person is saying and if it, in fact, aligns with your beliefs this means you are better suited to address someone else's comment rather than letting yourself get carried away. This means that if you see an opinion be it informed or uninformed you look at that opinion with a neutral view, and you do your due diligence based upon what the author states. It is exactly the difference of information you receive if someone recommended you buy SPY and someone, said buy a sub-1$ biotech company(protip: don't do that).
Good luck out there :)

Broker viewing algo

This may be a silly question, but here it is. Let's say I have an algo that's consistently making 1% per day. Surely the brokers know how much each of their customers make, so I could imagine some less honest brokers trying to reverse engineer or even take a peek at the code. I highly doubt that a more rebutable broker like IB would ever do this, but what about some of the sketchier Forex brokers?
Is it possible for a Forex broker to take a look at your code if you are trading with MT4?
Is it possible for a company like IB to take a look at your code if you are using a custom written Java program and connecting with them through the API?
Is this a valid concern or am I just paranoid?

Building a personal computer for automated trading/analysis…what bottlenecks could I run into?

I've been trading forex and programming, but want to get into automated trading and analyzing data real-time to make decisions (and learning more about stats and math as a hobby). I only have a laptop with a small SSD, so I'm planning to build a computer for this.
  1. For storing data, would something like this 4tb hdd (http://www.amazon.com/Black-Performance-Desktop-Hard-Drive/dp/B00FJRS5BA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1431732770&sr=1-1&keywords=wd+black+4tb) work? I'm not sure if the seek time will matter (vs getting a SSD) because most of the data reading will be sequential anyways, right? Will a regular HDD work or will it bottleneck the performance? Will getting a HDD with size as large as 4TB bottleneck the performance?
  2. Should there be a minimum amount of memory/cpu/gpu I should aim for? (grabbing and analyzing real-time data especially)
  3. My broker (IB) offers platforms for both windows and unix. Does it matter which OS I use?
Thanks!

Questions Answers
I have a good friend who is a VP at your firm . They blamed the entire Financial crisis on ' poor people who could not afford their mortgages ' they said this was pretty much he opinion among the investment banks . How do you feel about what happened to Greece and Goldmans hand in it ? That is not true. Opinion is very much split within the investment banks and there is no right or wrong answer. I personally don't believe at all that the crisis was caused by 'poor people' - and I don't like that sort of categorization of people in the first place. There are perhaps 15/20 different institutions you could blame for the crisis, there's no way of isolating individuals. I'm not sure what exactly you think GS's hand in the Greece affair was. Of course it's a sad story and I feel remorseful - I recently donated £50,000 at a charity ball to help rebuild one of the islands which has almost been burned to the ground. But ultimately Greece employed GS at the time because they wanted to fudge their finances so as to meet entry requirements for the Euro i.e. the greek government was knowingly employing GS to help perform an extremely risky task - GS didn't force anything upon them. If the experiment explodes 10 years later (as it did), should GS really be the party to blame?
The next day, you are flipping through television channels and randomly come across a pre-season CFL game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Knowing your inevitable future, do you now watch it? Yes of course i fucking do. The future is inevitable. Chuck Klosterman i like your name.
I love seeing the ignorance that emerges in these AMA's relating to investment bankers. I am really interested in a career in either IB or Consulting, have a few questions for you. Thank you to fletch below for answering this question.
1) How did you cope with the hours? I like working hard, I like working for my money but I also like enjoying free time and having a social life. When working a 100 hours as an analyst that would certainly have to suffer 2)What were you academic results like through your degree? I'm currently in my second year and will be realistically looking at 2.2, 2.2, 2.1 and 2.1 (years 1-4). This summer I'd hope to get an accountancy internship in one of the big 4 followed by an internship next year in one of the large IBs. I know there's more to a candidate than solely their academic credentials + internship but would this stand me well for a BB in London? (Top Irish university, undergrad will be in Business and French) 3) What is it that makes you enjoy this job? I know the paycheck is certainly a bonus but you've said there's more to it than that? Whatever your breakdown between modules is, you need a 2.1 overall. Even if your average is 60% or 61%, that's enough to get you past the minimum requirements and through to interviews. After that it's up to you - they'll take someone with a good business mind and strong communications skills irrespective of whether they average 60 or 78 or 92. I disagree with him. My job is extremely rewarding and i wouldn't swap it for any other industry at the moment. If you want evidence of people enjoying their jobs look at the number of years they spend at their respective firms. Most of the partners at GS are 'home-grown' and have spent 20/30 years sweating away but don't regret it for a second.
Do you realize that in countries like Spain you're seen as an evil person that only wants to get profit and don't have any soul or feelings and probably kicks puppies for fun? If so, how do you feel about it? Yes and understand their anger but it should be re-directed to politicians!
Proof? and of course... how much did you make in 2012 approximately? Approx 600k. How do upload proof e.g. photo evidence?
Sorry, new to reddit!
Do you have free ticket for me? Always looking for handouts. What is it young people say, lolz??
I'm very curious of your opinion of Secretary Geithner's role in LIBOR. Do you think he was guilty? innocent? Thanks! LIBOR scandal is way too complicated to explain at 2.30 am after a few beers. Many active players are implicated and i think he will be seen in the wrong eventually like many others.
What hours do you work? Approx 80 hours a week not incl. flight time I go to festivals in Europe but would love to go it. Do you have free ticket for me?
If the concept and idea of a monetary system was replaced with something better (hypothetically) what would you do? As in for a career or what not since now you are jobless. Resources will always be scarce so someone will have to ensure an optimal allocation. There will always be a market of some kind whether it be a public market or an internal government one.
Hypothetically we could have unlimited power, molecular production, and master matteenergy conversion. Would that change your answer? Good interview question. I'll keep it in mind.
In your view, are there any regulations that could meaningfully alter the moral hazard typified by the 2008-2009 bailout of the financial sector? If so, what might they be? And if not, to what extent does regulatory capture play a role? Regulatory capture is a seriously problem not just in banking e.g. also in the energy business. How do you reduce it? It won't happen unless the public demand it, as everyone with power tends to benefit from it and so they won't make meaningful steps to change anything, i.e. its a win win situation for government and business. However it needs more than just 'occupy movements' but rather i am talking the mass voter population.
Have you seen @gselevator on twitter? if so have you ever contributed/is it legit? Haha yes i have seen it and no its not legit, well at least i think its not. Seriously though the elevator chats can be quite entertaining and revealing.
Do you use a mouse when you work on excel? Are you joking?
No.
In your opinion, do you think the money you make is worth the hell that you go through to make it? I love my job and so i am lucky that the money is not the only motivator.
But yes i love checking my bank balance at an atm.
How can i break into finance with a sub-par gpa? Network and try non BB firms.
A company founded by 100 duck sized horses. or A company founded by 1 horse sized duck? 100 duck sized horses every time. Basic risk management theory - don't put all your eggs in one basket. If that 1 horse sized duck isn't exceptional, your business is going down the tubes.
Prior to the collapse, did you have any idea what was about to happen? It was getting obvious that there was a bubble, but never predicted how great the fallout would be and that in 2013 we would still be suffering
What do you do day to day? I work in the energy field in Europe but don't want to get too specific. Day to day we advise natural resource companies on all things financial such as m&a and financing strategy and then execute on their behalf. So I am on the corporate finance side rather than sales and trading. However I work closely with the syndication and sales guys such as if we are executing an IPO or a follow-on share offering.
I have a buddy who's small but established clean tech company needs money building biodiesel manufacturing plants around the US that run off garbage and wood chips. The technology is actually coming from a company based in Sweden. Can you help him on the money side? Send me a link to their website.
I find clean tech very interesting.
How did you get your job? Did a summer internship then got FT conversion.
What college did you go to? I went to LSE (university in the UK)
What jobs did you work before getting this one? Did another internship whilst at university at an oil company.
At what age did you get this job? 22.
I hear the GS company culture is like " a frat on steriods" true or false? False more than true but depends on team.
Is it as cut throat as I have heard with the bottom 50% of people getting sacked each year to make way for new guys who will probably be sacked the year after? Bottom 5% is more accurate. 7-8% in a bad year, 3-4% in a good year. It's a fine line between 'cut throat' and having a 'healthy competitive atmosphere'. But we'd be out of business very quickly if we kept firing half of our staff every year...
Is there any stock I should look into in 2013? Long term or short term. Short term- African Barrick Gold. The chinese walked away and so the share price plunged and despite serious operational issues, the massive drop has presented a golden buying opportunity.
Long term- anything to avoid inflation, inflation scares the crap out of me and is going to be a big problem in the Uk and elsewhere in the future.
Also buy into soft commodity boom e.g. meat in africa, think zambeef etc if you can find an attractive entry point.
What's the best preparation for an interview with an i-bank? I'm over here in the states and come from a non-target. Read WSO, the forums are full of useful hints and tips especially for non target guys. Depending on what area you are applying for, make sure you know some really good examples and stock pitches as it is amazing how many candidates lack knowledge e.g. if applying for ECM for god sakes know some of the recent IPO's and likewise for equity research have good stock pitches and have conviction when presenting. Best of luck!
How important is your undergrad majogpa I'm double majoring in Econ/Conflict resolution studies with a possible minor in poly sci (depending on how the credits work out) I got a 3.9 gpa last semester but it only brought my overall gpa to a 2.4 because fuck klonopin. I should have at least a 3.0 by graduation, but I'm wondering its worth it to pay for and retake my first semester. Can I have $373 dollars? :D :D I promise only to get moderately drunk with this money. Sorry, a lot of questions, thanks for answering. Oh also, one last thing, all else being equal, is calc I enough math to apply for analyst job? or do I need more? Undergrad course choice is not that important for IBD but obviously for more quant roles you need maths skills Again i am sorry but i am not very clued up on GPA Ok i give you money but first you have to register yourself as a charity so that you can gift aid it and get much more!
Where did you go to college? LSE.
As an undergrad? How hard was it? I hear it's very difficult. Yes, undergrad.
Harder than most places depending on your course. Especially as you are competing with loads of kids from Asia who do extra calculus to relax.
How do you see regulation affecting the overall banking culture? Everything I have been reading and what people have been saying is that the culture is changing. Have you been seeing this? I recommend reading "The Culture of Success" by Lisa Endlich.
Also how do you like the goldman culture? Regulation is hurting us...but: Link to business.financialpost.com
How much total did you make in each of your years at the firm? I don't want to get into specifics.
But for your first three years as an analyst roughly 50k-70k (£ not $)
As an associate 120k-160k.
After that the numbers get exciting.
What tools do you use on a regular basis? Excel, Outlook, Excel, Outlook, Excel, Outlook...powerpoint.
What is the biggest reward of working in IB? Where I study, students with high grades are pushed to chase the prestigious internships firms like GS, MS, etc offer. Their reasoning why they chase these jobs is that they think it is the highest (prestige) in finance they can go or are attracted by the money. It seems shallow to me. What does IB offer that makes your career personally fulfilling? Why didn't you choose to work elsewhere? I find what i do at the front end of the energy sector fascinating. If your interested in business or globalisation or other similiar areas then IBD is pretty much at the cutting edge of it.
Thanks for the reply! When you were first starting out at GS, were you able to balance a personal life aside from your work? Has it gotten easier as you have gained more experience? Would you recommend IB as a field to pursue to your own children today? Thanks again! I'd say during my first 3 years as an analyst the 'balance' was almost non-existent i.e. i was regularly working 100+ hours/week. Since then it's become easier year by year and i think that's true for most. And yes certainly i would encourage my children to pursue it - not that i have any yet.
Where did you go to uni what was your gpa? how many physics majors work their? did you start off as an intern? sorry for rapid firing questions. LSE (london school of economics) - first class honours but don't know how that translates into GPA.
I know only 3/4 physics majors in the office at the moment.
Yes started as an intern.
Do banker run the world? how much political influence do they really have? It works two ways. Some bankers have their fingers in politics in a way they perhaps shouldn't. But equally many politicians have their fingers in banking and can force our hands.
How hard is it for a non ivy leager studying finance to get an entry level job at GS? what about internships? Tough. But with enough internship experience beforehand it's possible.
What do you think of Forex? Would you ever trade on it with your personal money? Difficult to answer - you can trade forex in a million different ways - some ways are more interesting than others. I don't personally trade it, but others forge a very successful career out of it.
What was your bets investment in? (If that's how it works) That's not really my role in IBD.
But outside GS I invested in the Shanghai property market a decade ago or so. My 4 flats there are now worth 10-12 times what they were worth then.
WTF caused the 2010 flash crash? Good question. Nobody knows for sure.
From the link you've provided, I find no.2 the most plausible explanation. But I would also add 6. UBS did something stupid again.
As hardcore capitalists what is your feeling about (management of) banks that seem to live under the impression that profits are for a happy few while losses should be carried by tax-payers? That's not what I believe at all.
And by the way all of us are tax payers too. The top 5% contribute approx. 50% of the government's taxation revenue. So if losses are being 'carried by tax-payers' - that doesn't exclude people in the banking industry by any means.
Matt Levin at Dealbreaker (former GS guy) describes Investment Bankers as "Travelling money salesmen". Do you feel that this description is apt? The operative word in your question is 'former'
Do you think that's how he described investment bankers whilst he was still with the firm?
People tend to get very bitter and sensitive after they get fired. See Gregg Smith for further evidence..
Is an MBA necessary to be competitive when looking for a job or is a B. Comm enough to compete with others when looking for jobs in the industry? Depends on what entry point - if you do an mba then you apply for associate entry whereas b.comm is an undergrad degree and so you apply for analyst roles. If you do a b.comm at a top university/college and get some internships then you should be well placed. Good luck!
Do any of your co-workers frequent Reddit? I imagine less than 0.1%.
Then again 2 people on this feed at least have claimed to be my co-workers, so who knows...
Since you're new to Reddit, what made you want to do an ama here? I'd like to alter the public perception of bankers - not all of us are the obnoxious greedy individuals you read about in the media.
I'm also extremely interested in hearing what non-finance people see as our key economic issues at the moment - this seemed a good way to find out.
Proof? How do i upload photos? i will upload photo proof. Sorry not very experienced with reddit!
I am a senior in high school and I am interested in majoring in either accounting or finance, but I don't think I know enough about either career path to make the best decision, can you explain the large differences the two paths I would go down depending on major, or any advice that may influence my decision that I would not know at this point? What you choose to study doesn't necessarily determine the industry you'll end up in. We have guys in the office who studied history, languages, even medicine. Just go for what interests you the most and focus on getting high marks.
Curious as to what kind of degree you hold/what was your GPA in college? BSc. Economics degree from LSE. First class honours, don't know about gpa
I used to work for the swiss banks and swiss stock market indirectly, and have a few friends in the banking business, including GS and Nakamura in London. What is your personall opinion on prostitution, cocaine, and medication misusage in your business? Also, also what is your stance on GS' questionable involvment in Backpage.com? With regards to backpage.com, the guys on the deal did not do their KYC checks properly. KYC checks are crucial for banks- your reputation and future success is more important than any single customer. Look up riggs bank and the Obiang family and then you'll see!
Possible. But realistically those kind of excuses are given no matter what really happened. For a company as big and powerful as GS I can only take it with a grain of salt. Are you content in the way GS does business from a moral point of view? It's either a pinch of salt, or a grain of sand...
Thanks. I'm not a native english speaker and have not used it regularly for years, so it's gotten pretty shit. Any chance you answer the other questions? Yes, apologies. I think some of our deals have been morally reprehensible in the past. The same goes for any major investment bank. But i think we've done a very good job in 'cleaning up our act' over the past few years and the public has played a large part in that. With any luck we will see a much healthier banking industry soon.
How accurate is what is said on the Twitter handle @GSElevator? It's grossly exaggerated, but not entirely inaccurate...
You guys got trolled hard. A GS IBD guy not knowing how to upload something to the internet? Seriously wtf. Probably some guy from wso who wanted to feel like he was "in". Link to i.imgur.com Just doing some work now! Link to i.imgur.com In case you wondered what Lloyd's signature looked like.
Is there anyway you can help me out, connections or anything, someone I should talk to to get a interview? Can you interview me, I shall forward you my resume! Private message me and we will discuss. Sure i can help you out. I know how tough it is for you guys who are trying to get in!
Any thoughts on the MSI/SSG mini-scandal this week? Yes but won't comment.
Very hush hush.
I also work for GS. Which building are you in? I'm based in PBC. Also IBD, North. Would do an AMA and provide proof. I'm in PBC too, moved from RC quite a few years ago. I'm not sure exactly what sort of proof i'm supposed to provide...?
Would you say you were groomed for this kind of work from a young age? LSE is an elite school. Did you go to elite private schools growing up or were you an exceptional student at a normal school? Yes, Jimmy groomed me from four years old
Do you like your job, or should i say career? Yes. If i did not then i would go and sail around the world again.
From your experience, how relevant is CFA nowdays? Definitely worth doing.
How large was your Xmas bonus and did it get taxed over 50%? See below - total comp was c.600k and yes taxed above 50%
You said in other replies that you were 22 when you got this job and make 600K now. How old are you now, and how long did it take you to get the that salary level? Is it all commission? Was analyst at 22 and then moved up the ranks. Just turned 30, feeling old now!.
Can you give some insight on the business model of Investment banking? (I have no clue to be honest) . And what does a portfolio manager do exactly? Portfolio manager is not IBD. He/she would work in investment management e.g. for blackrock or GSAM or a hedge fund.
I'm currently writing a thesis on the future of rentierism in the gulf with an emphasis on Saudi Arabia. I don't have much of an economic background apart from this, but the international energy market is obviously important to my research. Can you recommend any good (preferably free or low cost) primers and newsletters on the subject? Hmm there are many on energy market but not too sure about rentier specific ones. Will have a think. I did my university thesis on Saudi and so will have a dig around.
How do you live with yourself? Knowing that the company that you work for doesn't give a fuck about you or anybody. All they care about is money. They have ruined america many times over. Seriously, how do you live with yourself? Actually our business is dependent on America and more importantly the rest of the world's prosperity. So actually our interests are nicely aligned.
Link to www.rollingstone.com. Seems to me like your bosses and former bosses don't give a flying fuck about anyone but themselves. Can you name one good thing Sachs has done since you have been there? I think you meant 'don't give a flying fuck" in your comment.
Do you happen to work with quantitative analysts? Depends which deal we are working on. Sometimes we need them, other times we don't.
What's your retirement savings invested in? Property (international and uk), shares mainly through tax efficient ways e.g. isa and EIS, pensions and artwork.
No swiss bank account i am afraid.
"The first thing you'll realize is that they are extremely disciplined. You would never come across a Goldman employee, who would, after two or three beers, say "My colleagues are a bunch of dickheads" From Money and Power William D Cohan. What do you have to say about this? I agree with it.
What advice would you give someone who is interested in going into finance and is currently in university. What would you have liked to do in your time spent at LSE now looking back? Party more! You only live once. You can have that advice for free.
Thanks for the AMA. Do you know anybody I could speak with regarding interviewing and internship opportunities? Private message me.
Doing an AMAA are you putting your job at risk for releasing company secrets/opinions whatever? I've not released a single company secret.
Edit: added an A to AMA. There's nothing in my contract to say I can't express my own opinions.
What do the hopes and dreams of Americans taste like? Raspberry sorbet, in my opinion
What is your feeling on the separation of traditional banking and investment banking as is proposed by the FSA? I think overall it's sensible - Barclays being the best example of why they should be separated.
At GS specifically of course we're not involved in traditional retail banking at all so it's not the most pressing issue for us at the moment.
You mentioned 80 hour work weeks. Could you explain the timeline for your typical work day. Do you work 7 days per week? Is your work more project based where you go non stop and have some time off between projects? There's no typical working day - some days are 18 hours and others are 12. Depends entirely what stage of a deal we are at. Generally I work 5/6 days a week, but keep in email contact with the office 24/7.
Yes, entirely project based. But if we are doing our jobs properly there's not much 'time off' in between.
I'm currently on target for a 2:1 or a first at university in my economics degree. But due to a slight hiccup in my a-levels, in which i got A* A C, still managed to go to a top 10 university but do they look at the C, which was in maths. Your university grades are definitely more important. If you do well in a mathematical module at uni that will allay any fears they have about an A-level grade.
Do they look at a-level grades and expect a minimum maths grade? I'm not bad at maths by any means, just an unfortunate anomaly in the exam season. Which uni are you at and what do you study?
Manchester and economics BA - but i have econometric modules and another mathematical module for 2nd year. Any chance of switching it to a BSc? Immediately reassures employers about your quantitative skills..
Hello there, first of all I want to thank you for doing this AMA. I am a dutch college student and currently I'm writing an essay about the BRIC countries. I used your book to write down predictions of their economic future, and I'd like to ask: did you participate in writing that book? Are you referring to Jim O'Neill's book? I have a copy on my desk, but no I wasn't involved in writing it.
What do the guys at GS think about @gselevator? See same q&a earlier on!
How often do interns get recommended to come back? In a good year, approx. 50% of an intern class will get hired.
In a bad year (2008 for example) perhaps only 10% or 20%
Any opinion on Nautilus Minerals? Can't comment on that company i am afraid.
How do you feel about manipulating the currency markets to screw over the average retail trader? I don't know what you are talking about.
Have you ever seen American Psycho? Yes.
I am going to copy and paste this in an email and send it around my team. You will famous at the firm, well at least in my team in london anyway! Yes of course i fucking do. The future is inevitable. Chuck Klosterman i like your name. That would also be an awesome interview question! And i give them 5 secs to answer.
I highly doubt GS interns work for free. I've almost never heard of an internship in finance that didn't pay -- most firms I've encountered usually pay the same base wage as the first year full timer positions you are interning for. Interns in front office at GS in london get circa £42k pro rata. So not bad for a summer job and remember no tax as they are below threshold across the year!
Gold Mansachs. Not sure about that one.
I prefer Goldman Snachs, the name of our canteen.
Yes, Jimmy groomed me from four years old But yes went to a private boarding school before. Widening the diversity of applicants in IB is a key target for HCM.
What is the future of investment banking in a new world order where both governments and the people are fed up with the excesses that led us into this credit crisis. The industry is always evolving, that's what makes it an exciting industry to be in. I imagine it will take us a good few years to fully regain the trust of certain clients, but ultimately if this whole saga causes us to readdress our methods and practices to improve our service then in the long run it's a positive outcome.
PS. Do you not think people should be fed up with the governments too, as well as the banks?
Not OP but I can answer this as a 2012 intern who got converted for Programming. A Math degree is a good +. There are 2 ways. Either join in as a programmer, show your merit and change departments, ie move to Quant side. Other option is to get a MBA, and join the I-Banking dept you want. What's your name?
Do you have any books or resources you'd recommend the layman for learning investment skills (i.e. the wealthy barber) I ask because i feel there is a lot of crap out there and would like to genuinely learn. I have never heard of the wealthy barber.
